Young Barn Swallow

This young barn swallow sat for a few moments at the edge of a roof this afternoon. We were able to take some photos through the spotting scope from just a few yards away. I'm amazed at the texture of the downy feathers visible at this close range, as well as their lovely apricot color.

Beautiful! I'm seeing lots of swallows these days over here, mostly zooming over the pond in our neighborhood. I'll have to keep my eye out for chubby little babies.

Great photos! There are two barn swallow nests under our deck right outside of the window of my office. I have really enjoyed watching them this summer, as the parents bring food the the young ones and the swallows attempt to fly. A couple of them have hit the glass but they soon figure out which way to go. The nests can be messy (poop-wise), but the rain or a squirt of the hose usually cleans that up.

Awesome captures of the little cutie Penny! My favorite time of year is nesting and fledging time. Watching the adults raise their young is amazing.
